Hello, thanks for dropping by the TreeSpace Studio!

guide to materials

handmadepaperMateriality is very important to us. Because most of our work is paper-based and we aim to impact the earth as lightly as possible, we take great pains in the selection of materials we use and who we buy them from. We only use artisan or handmade papers and source the majority of them from local USA mills with sustainable practices. Envelopes are at least 50-100% post consumer waste recycled or handmade from renewable sources. We have swatch and sample kits for sale in our shop so you can touch and feel it yourself.

Here’s a list of our favorites:

Handmade Seeded Papers

These are thick, gorgeous papers made by hand in USA, studded with seeds (wildflowers or herbs) and come in beautiful shades. A mix of recycled cotton rag, recycled papers or tree-free fibers they are perfect for everything from invitations, to greeting cards to business cards and notecards. They can be both rustic or refined.  Available trimmed or with natural deckles.

Handmade Artisan Papers

Traditionally made for artist uses, we love them both for our original paintings and also for the final prints. Pure refined luxury! 100% re-purposed cotton rags or mixed with plant fibers. They come with natural deckles and trimmed versions. Handmade in USA.

Japanese Handmade Washi Papers and Nepalese Papers

These creamy-colored papers, made from Kozo (mulberry) and other tree-free plant fibers are beautiful and look like no other papers. They are almost fabric-like and have a special resilience. Often used for conservation purposes, these are best when you are looking for vintage-inspired designs.

Fabric

We like 100% natural fabrics: unbleached organic cotton muslin and linen are our favorites. We often stock vintage or thrifted fabrics as well. We love printing on fabrics for an unusual touch.

Wood

Who doesn’t love wood? We like it paper-thin for printing or thicker for crafting. Sustainably sourced of course-vintage/thrifted or FSC-certified.

Metal

Here’s a secret, we are art metalsmiths for leisure. One day the studio will have a metal art jewelry collection! Japanese alloys patina beautifully and are our favorite. Copper is inexpensive and very malleable. It is possible to etch or screen-print on metals for unconventional items. Ask us.
